The Twisted Metal series on Peacock is based on the popular Playstation classic, which is still loved by older Millennials today. I always take a slight pause when it comes to adaptations of video games to movies or TV. The Mortal Kombat series TNT aired in the late 1990s still sticks in my mind as some of the worst TV made. However, The Last of Us’ wild success gave me hope as I entered the series.
They’re ten episodes, timed at about 30 minutes each, so if you want to binge watch it, you’ll only need about 3 hours instead of the usual weekend. First, the soundtrack is amazing. Everything from Sisquo’s Thong Song to Aqua’s Barbie Girl. There’s a song that will bring you back to your high school days somewhere during the series. The action is great, along with the pacing. Also, meeting the people in the walled cities are what you would expect.
Now, here’s were the anti-woke circle jerk will have the problem. Neve Campbell plays a great role as the mayor of New San Franciso, and even starts to sucker the viewer in with her promise to John Doe. The OC is wild, cutting fingers off of their indentured servants, when things aren’t to the owner’s expectations. And of course, the thin blue line people will have issues with The Law. However, do you not think that in a post-America, these people wouldn’t exist? Have you seen the hellscapes that are Twitter and Facebook? Have you seen political YouTubers? They would eat your first born if given a chance. The story was great, and the setup for a second season that would be closer to the game was outstanding.
However, there is one glaring negative. While Samoa Joe and Will Arnett were near perfect as the body and voice, respectively, of Sweet Tooth, Let’s talk about Michael Kane’s backstory changing again. In Twisted Metal Black, we find out that Kane is a serial killing ice cream man that was cursed by The Preacher when he was sentenced to death for his crimes. However, in the TV series, he was a child actor that was put away after murdering his co-star, a dog. The years without his parents drove him even more insane, leading to him murdering them after the virus struck the computers.
I prefer the Twisted Metal Black version of Sweet Tooth’s backstory. At the very least, the show could have made Sweet Tooth leave the asylum at 18, get a job as an ice cream truck driver, and then be a serial killer. It was a huge miss by Peacock here. Otherwise, it’s a great watch for fans of the game, and even people who are being introduced to the world of Twisted Metal for the first time.
