Step into the Macabre Tavern once more, weary travelers. Though summer may be approaching outside these shadowed walls, the stories that crossed our threshold this past week will keep your blood running cold. This week: we’ll talk about saving a horror icon, a popular horror video game is getting a movie adaptation, and Blumhouse is taking over the Saw franchise.

Save the Mall!

The Monroeville Mall, where George A. Romero famously filmed Dawn of the Dead, was recently sold to Walmart. A petition has circulated online by Dawn of the Dead star Ken Foree. The mall is a movie icon, not just for Dawn of the Dead, but the TV show Mindhunter and the ice skating scene from Zack and Miri Make a Porno were also shot there. There is nothing from Walmart about the fate of the mall yet, nor the fate of the Romero statue as well.

Blumhouse and Atomic Monster Want to Take You Ghost Hunting

Phasmophobia fans rejoice! You’re getting a movie. Kinetic Games announced last week that Blumhouse has started working on a film adaptation of Phasmophobia.

From the blog post:

“We’re thrilled to officially announce that a Phasmophobia film adaption is in development - it’s a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting,” said Daniel Knight (Dknighter), Director of Kinetic Games and Lead Developer of Phasmophobia. “We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we’re so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact Phasmophobia has had in the gaming space and beyond. Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can’t wait to share more as the project develops.”

Are you excited for a Phasmo movie? Big wins for indie developers.

Speaking of Blumhouse

So, Saw isn’t quite dead yet. Reports were that the franchise was over due to the chaos of the Saw XI filming. The producers started fighting, and Lionsgate basically threw their hands up. That’s where Blumhouse came in, however, that means Mark Burg and Oren Koules are out with Twisted. Blumhouse bought their shares and are now partners with Lionsgate, who will maintain their 50% share of the franchise. Will James Wan come back to his beloved franchise to breathe in new life? Only time will tell. Let loose in the comments: is it time for Saw to finally be laid to rest, or are you ready to play another game?

...AND FINALLY

You can stop asking The Fun Pimps when the Storms Brewin’ update is coming. Tomorrow (June 10th) will be the first dev stream of 7 Days to Die 2.0. Then, creator weekend will be Friday through Sunday. For us console peasants, we won’t get our hands on the new update until June 30th. Meanwhile, if you’re on Steam you can get the experimental next Monday.

You’re now all caught up on the big horror news of last week. If you have a scoop, send it to me [email protected], and if you want to leave a tip, you can check out my tip jar.

Until next week, stay hydrated.
